Press

Sometimes I think this country only exists on the press map when floods, hunger or any other similar disaster strike. Even favorable articles appearing now and then are seemingly paid or suggested by local companies, mainly the ones investing in tourism.

I know it’s not fair for poor peripheral countries only to interest the press when something bad happens. Let’s face it: the existing North centrism is almost impossible to fight, but I regard as healthy to point the finger at it from time to time.

A way of showing a different approach might be by collecting press texts or parts of them, when they seem fair and relevant. I guess it’s not going to be long because of the reasons already told. If by chance you step into something really interesting I would gladly appreciate your collaboration.

Ten Great Reasons

I read an article on a South African newspaper stating 10 great reasons to visit Mozambique. I was curious and I think you might be too, especially if you plan a visit.

1. Gorongosa National Park. After being destroyed during the war the beautiful park is being brought back to life.

2. Horsing around on Bazaruto. That’s Paradise Islands.

3. Adrift on Lago Niassa. It seems to be unique.

4. Being cool at peri-peri chicken. Yep!

5. Snorklling at Santa Carolina island. A must do.

6. History – live – on Ilha. Highly recommended.

7. Rails across the north. A journey for the more adventurous ones.

8. Seafood of the Gods. It’s about Costa do Sol restaurant!

9. Sailing on the Bay of Dhows. That’s Inhambane Bay, ultimate paradise for photographing boats and sunsets.

10. And one for the beer. Be it in Vilankulos or some other place, you definitively have to know the taste.

Unspoiled Beauty
Most of the places we have been visiting seem to be time-wrapped. Here, beauty is usually associated with isolation, poverty and decay. As I’ve often concluded, the conjugation of those sad circumstances is the reason explaining why most destinations remain unspoiled.

If you want to have an idea of what to expect of a stay in Mozambique, I selected a passage from a South African newspaper describing holidays on the northern island of Ibo:

“Kids rolled hoops along the street, played marbles in the dust and kicked around footballs made from blown-up condoms or plastic bags. They smiled and waved, then giggled when we showed them their photos on our cameras and begged to be snapped again.”

“The days went by too quickly. We kayaked among the mangroves as the sun rose, admiring the birds and searching for the Nile crocodiles that reputedly still live in the swamps. We saw leaping dauphins and scanned the sea for the humpback whales and calves that frequent Ibo’s calm waters in spring. We were spoilt rotten with massages and gourmet cuisine – seafood platters, crab curry and other treats – and we read on the cushions of the verandas and sat on the rooftop terrace, watching the old go by and composing classic photos of dhows framed by a red sun sinking into the sea.”

I haven’t been particularly attentive to the press coverage on Mozambique, but I could understand that South African newspapers and magazines give a fair space to tourism related material. I read a couple of small articles printed by a popular men’s magazine, type: How to get there… What you need to get there… What to expect once there…

The travel supplement of a main newspaper has been publishing tourism stories too, especially three articles on the April 26 issue: 1) One of them giving a fair image of what Maputo is. 2) A text firstly published by The Times, London about Ibo Island. 3) The last one is about the Northern deserted islands of Topuito, Nejovo and Caldeira.

I guess that internationally Mozambique is synonymous of tourism. Those who rule this country should be more aware of that.

And there’s the South-African monthly in-flight magazine, which gave a serious space to Mozambique on its April issue with several titles:

“The magic of Mozambique – an undiscovered idyll” – It even changed a few holiday plans I had already made! Such amazing destinations! Did you know that there’s a lodge in Inhambane conceived for lovers?

“Mozambican Magic” – Nice one about Mozambique first steps in fashion, with a fashion week since 2005. At least it’s not only tourism!

“The Mozambique Miracle” – About doing business in Mozambique, in 2009.

“Marrabenta – still Mozambique main music” – A cultural article on popular music.

“The Mozambique Experience” – Good information for tourists.

Almost the entire issue! Not bad!

July 12 sunday Times’ Travel and Food supplement published, as central story, a very interesting article about Inhaca Island, mixing History, kayaking and tourism.
