Parque dos Continuadores ou Feima is gradually improving our social and cultural life. We’ve been meeting people almost everyday, mainly people we haven’t seen for a looong time. And there’s always some interesting event going on.
Last week our walk was interrupted by a powerful batuque call. Young batuqueiros (drummers) from Mafalala neighbourhood presented what appeared to be two musical arrangements, a truly manifestation of African joy and a clever idea to maintain boys interested in tradition instead of booze or worse.
Batuque is a strong, virile manifestation of whatever is happening, good or bad. I regard it as a therapeutical experience. If you approach a batuque gathering your heart starts to thrum in a different cadence and soon nothing matters but the rhythm itself. What about using it as a cure for the constrains of modern life?
